How to Choose an Abstract Painting for Your Living Room

The living room is often the heart of the home. It’s where we spend time with family, relax, and welcome guests. That’s exactly why choosing the right artwork can have a strong impact on the overall atmosphere of the space.

Abstract paintings are very popular today because they can bring life into a room through color, texture, and emotion. A well-chosen piece can become a defining element of the interior and naturally draw attention.

But how do you choose an abstract painting for your living room so that it truly fits the space and enhances your interior style?

Why Choose Abstract Art for Your Living Room

Abstract art has one major advantage—it leaves space for personal interpretation. Everyone can see something different in it and respond to it in their own way.

Unlike realistic paintings, abstract artworks often focus on color, movement, and texture. Because of that, they can bring energy, calmness, or a sense of dynamism into a space.

If you are looking for something in between—not fully abstract, but not realistic floral paintings either—my abstract floral artworks might be a perfect fit.

Such a painting can act as a strong visual element in your interior, connecting colors in the room and creating an interesting contrast.

What Size Painting to Hang Above a Sofa

The size of the artwork is one of the most important factors.

If a painting is too small, it can get lost on a large wall. On the other hand, a large painting can create a dominant focal point and unify the space.

A general rule is that a painting above a sofa should be approximately 60–80% of the sofa’s width.

Large abstract paintings have the advantage of significantly influencing the atmosphere of a room and giving the space a distinct character.

From my own experience—and surprisingly for many people—large formats are much more popular than small ones. Paintings around 140 × 140 cm are especially in demand, and I personally love working in this size.

How to Choose Colors for Your Living Room Artwork

The colors of the painting should harmonize with your interior. They don’t have to match exactly, but they should work well together.

When choosing, consider:

- wall color

- sofa color

- accessories like cushions, rugs, or curtains

An abstract painting can either subtly complement these tones or create a contrast that brings energy into the space.

In neutral interiors, for example, a colorful abstract painting can add vibrancy and movement.

People often ask me if I have paintings in a specific color to match their cushions. My advice is always the same: choose a painting you truly love—not one that only matches your decor. Colors should work together, but they don’t need to be identical.

Where to Hang a Painting in the Living Room

The most common placement is above the sofa.

Ideally, the center of the painting should be at eye level. If it’s hung too high, it can feel disconnected from the rest of the space.

Lighting also plays an important role. Natural daylight or soft spot lighting can beautifully highlight the texture and colors of the artwork.

My paintings are highly textured, so light makes a big difference. I especially love when sunlight hits the surface from different angles and reveals layers of paint, visible brush strokes, and mixed media elements such as sand, beads, or sequins.

How to Choose a Painting Based on Room Size

The size of the room also affects your choice.

In smaller rooms, a medium-sized painting or a gallery wall of smaller pieces can work well. In larger spaces, a large-format artwork often stands out best and fills the wall more naturally.

A large abstract floral painting can become a strong visual focal point and give the room a distinctive character.

Why Choose an Original Painting Instead of a Print

An original hand-painted artwork has a unique character. Every brushstroke, texture, and detail is created during the process, making each piece one of a kind.

An original painting can bring personality into your interior and create a strong visual presence that cannot be fully replaced by a print.

(If you do choose a print, it’s best to select high-quality ones—ideally directly from the artist. I offer fine art prints on canvas and posters on this page.)
