Wool Tufted Tapestries as Contemporary Textile Art

Hand-tufted wool tapestry with abstract floral design in pink and green tones

In recent years, tufted wool tapestries have moved beyond the floor and into the world of contemporary wall art. Traditionally, tufting is a technique used in carpet production. Today, I use this craft in a different way: I translate my large-scale abstract floral paintings into tactile, three-dimensional textile artworks.

See my tapestries here.

These pieces are not rugs. They are sculptural wall objects — textile paintings made from 100% New Zealand sheep wool, designed to transform interiors visually and acoustically.

What Is Tufting?

Tufting is a textile technique in which yarn is punched through a stretched fabric backing using a tufting gun. The yarn forms loops or cut piles on the front surface, creating texture and depth.

The method is widely used in rug manufacturing, but in my studio it becomes something else entirely: a medium for contemporary textile wall art.

Each design begins as one of my abstract floral paintings. I reinterpret the composition in wool, carefully layering colors and adjusting pile height to preserve the energy, movement, and color transitions of the original artwork.

From Floral Painting to 3D Textile Artwork

My abstract flower paintings are known for vibrant color palettes and organic movement. When translated into wool, they gain an additional dimension — literal depth.

Unlike flat tapestries, my works are built as sculptural objects:

  • The wool wraps around the edges.

  • The textile surface bends slightly over the corners.

  • The piece appears almost like a soft cushion mounted on the wall.

From the front, you see color and form. From the side, you see volume and softness. This creates a 3D textile painting that interacts with light differently throughout the day.

100% New Zealand Wool – Natural Performance & Beauty

All my tufted wall tapestries are made from 100% sheep wool sourced from New Zealand — a premium material valued for its strength, elasticity, and color brilliance.

Wool is not only beautiful. It has exceptional natural properties:

  • Odor-resistant – wool does not absorb smells easily.

  • Hypoallergenic qualities – suitable for allergy-sensitive interiors.

  • Dust and mite resistant – wool fibers naturally discourage dust accumulation.

  • Color retention – pigments remain rich and luminous.

  • Soft but resilient texture – pleasant to touch, durable over time.

The slight natural coarseness of wool adds character. It is not synthetic smoothness; it is an honest, living material that brings warmth and depth to contemporary spaces.

Acoustic Benefits – A Functional Art Piece

Beyond aesthetics, wool has outstanding acoustic properties. The dense tufted surface absorbs sound waves, reducing echo and improving room acoustics.

Each piece functions similarly to a discreet acoustic panel while remaining a work of art. In modern interiors with concrete, glass, and hard surfaces, a wool tapestry can soften both sound and atmosphere.

Structure & Installation

Every tufted textile artwork contains:

  • A solid internal frame

  • A securely mounted metal hook attached to the frame

  • A finished back side with my original signature

The artwork arrives ready to hang.

Although soft to the touch, the structure is stable and durable. The internal frame keeps the piece firm while maintaining the sculptural textile appearance.

A Unique Textile Art Concept

Tufting is commonly associated with rugs. Using it as a medium for large-scale floral wall art is far less common.

Each tapestry is:

  • Designed and tufted in my studio

  • Based on my original abstract flower paintings

  • Signed on the back

  • Carefully packaged and shipped securely

These are not mass-produced décor objects. They are handmade wool textile artworks, created one by one.

Textile Wall Art for Contemporary Interiors

Tufted wool wall art works beautifully in:

  • Modern living rooms

  • Minimalist bedrooms

  • Children’s rooms

  • Creative studios

  • Design-focused offices

  • Hospitality and boutique interiors

The combination of vivid color, sculptural depth, and natural material creates a warm contrast to clean architectural spaces.

Why Choose a Wool Tufted Textile Painting?

If you are looking for:

  • A statement piece with texture and depth

  • Sustainable natural materials

  • Acoustic improvement in your interior

  • Contemporary floral textile art

  • A unique, collectible wall object

A hand-tufted wool tapestry offers all of this in one piece.

My tufted tapestries are where painting meets textile sculpture. They carry the language of my floral canvases into a softer, dimensional form — bringing color, warmth, and quietness into a space at the same time.
